This painting was a breakthrough for me. I had many ideas regarding surface texture, paint application, line quality and other nerdy artist stuff floating in my head and I finally put these ideas to the test. The scariest part of the painting was the scratching in of the drawing but I am very happy with the results. I think what made it scary was that even though I had the idea, I couldn't "see" the end result - probably because I had never experienced it in my art before. It's kind of like how you dream of driving your car when you're just 13 or 14 years old. The dream might include a sports car and you're racing down the open road with the wind wiping through your hair. Idealistic, right! Then reality sets in as you're sitting in your parents old car with some scary looking DMV person in the middle of heavy traffic and you're just doing your best to get back to the DMV alive. Really hard to do with the sweatiest palms in the world. But seriously, this painting has really inspired me! I think I just "grew" as an artist.
The subject matter is kind of special too. As a child, I would build models of these planes and hang them all over the ceiling in my bedroom. I have been waiting a long to paint an old airplane. I'm not exactly sure why because I have been sketching ideas out in my sketch books for years. Maybe I was just waiting for the right time. I do intend to paint more.
