LARRY REINHART
Beauty and the Beast
9x12 / Oil on Paper / Sold
My absolute favorite airplane, the Curtis P40, flown by the first American volunteer group who's nick name was the Flying Tigers. Everyone who worked in this group volunteered for this duty, but where paid well. This group of 100 pilots where some of the most prolific pilots during this time. They where indeed the best of the best, earning their wing in the different branches of the US military then returning to work under this privately run group of missionaries. Although dubbed the tigers the nose art actually takes after a shark face. This open mouth shark face was most likely seen on the 112th squadron RAF in North Africa, who in turn adopted it from a Germans heavy fighter wing flown in Crete.
